In 1860, P. Crystall and Company from Scotland set up a cotton bailing press at Kumta in North Kanara, Karnataka, India. One of their trusted employees was Mr. N. A. Sirur, the founder of the SIRUR GROUP OF COMPANIES, of which the Cotmac Group is an important constituent.

Mr. N. A. Sirur, due to his mature experience was invited to be a partner in P. Crystall and Company. After the demise of the senior Mr. P. Crystall, Mr. N. A. Sirur was given first preference to take over their business of cotton & yarn trading and the textile mills in Bangalore.

In 1915, Mr. N. A. Sirur retired from active business and entrusted the affairs of the mills to Mr. D. N. Sirur. his elder son. The affairs of the cotton & yarn trading were entrusted to the younger son, Mr. V. N. Sirur and this was the genesis of the SIRUR GROUP OF COMPANIES, which today includes over 10 companies with a total turnover of US $ 1500 m. They are broadly categorised as the Cotmac Group, Miven Group and the Mogora Cosmic Group.

The origin of the present Cotmac Group of Companies:

In 1950, M/s. N.A. Sirur & Co. opened a new business entity to take up distribution of engineering goods like agricultural machinery, motors, tractors, diesel engines, starters etc. to farmers and industries in North Karnataka. This company was named M/s. Sirur Agencies Pvt. Ltd.

It was then felt that the company should sound more functional and impersonal, and the name of the company was then changed from Sirur Agencies Pvt. Ltd. to "Cotmac", an acronym of COT-ton and MAC-hinery.

Thus Cotmac Private Limited came into existence in 1955.

The last few decades have brought singular development through expansion and diversification of business. Excellent growth resulting in increase in the number of companies from one to ten and branching out from the primary business of trading into activities connected with electronics, software, telecommunication etc. All these companies today constitute the Cotmac Group of Companies.
